RATING: BUY IT
Taking Mine by Rachel Schneider is not quite like any book I’ve read in this wide-ranging genre of Women’s Fiction. I just finished it and I’m struggling with finding my words. Yes, there’s a boy-meets-girl love story going on and yes, there’s a story of the streets and a story of intrigue, but…it’s more than that.
The blurb on Amazon mentions, “a world of fast cars, fast money, and fast crooks,” so that’s as much as I’ll allude to in this review to the actual storyline. Trust me when I say you’ll want to figure it all out for yourself. Even the slightest insinuation as to what’s to come might shift your experience and I don’t want to do that.
At first, I wasn’t sure what I was getting into and, I’ll be honest, I wasn’t immediately drawn in. Then WHAM! It really takes off and you Can’t. Stop. Reading.
Reading this book made me nervous and edgy. It made me second-guess throughout ~ back and forth, back and forth. There were hints that I wasn’t sure I could trust. And it was gritty in a really subtle way. I think that’s what stood out to me the most. So many of the stories out there that involve any sort of crime feel a little contrived ~ or at least I think they feel that way. This felt very real. Very authentic. It wasn’t over-the-top and, in fact, it was so understated, that I think it felt even more genuine.
It blows me away that this is the first book by Ms. Schneider. She is extremely talented and I am thrilled to have learned of her now (you will too!), and I am very much looking forward to her future work.
Just one more reason to love KU…
