RATING: READ IT
I discovered JC Santo when her first book, Inevitable Love (Navy Love Series, Book 1), won KUBR’s February YOU CHOOSE contest. I loved the book and the characters she created and was eagerly anticipating the release of her second book in the series, Love Unexpected. When I was sent an ARC last week, I jumped right in. Love Unexpected picks up where Inevitable Love leaves off and is the story of Tegan + Reed.
Ms. Santo writes about life. Real life. There isn’t drama for drama’s sake and everything that you read is entirely plausible. As simple as that sounds, we all know that so many books we read in this genre are not that way. Don’t get me wrong – I love reading about billionaires and MMA fighters and porn stars – but, there’s something really comforting and really nice (nope, that’s not a bad word) about real people with real issues.
As the series name implies, a number of the characters are in the Navy. These books don’t get into too much detail about their jobs, but you do get to experience it peripherally and get a small sense of understanding of how their jobs impact their lives.
Ms. Santo has done a really beautiful job of creating a cast of characters that is lovable and fun, yet complex in their own ways. I love the comradery amongst the group and I loved revisiting their world and getting to know them each a little better.
Woven throughout Love Unexpected is the story of J.C. + Jo. The book ends with a prologue for Resilient Love, Book 3 in the series, and is their story. For me, I don’t love cliffies and we all know that if there’s a prologue for the next book, it’s most certainly going to leave us hanging. Personally, I don’t deal with those well (I have zero patience!), so I will honestly say that I did not read it. If you can handle the wait, I say go for it!
As of 3.30.16, Love Unexpected is available on Kindle Unlimited.
