You know when you’re having a particularly bad day you like to end it with a little self-pitying and indulgence? Okay, maybe this is more of a “me” thing. So, here’s my confession – I’ve had a rough couple of months. Life has gotten mean and I’ve taken the hits, one right after the other. It’s just how I am. I come home at the end of each day and try to release what I can by losing myself in a book. But with Z.B. Heller’s The Chronicles of Moxie I couldn’t get lost. This is the first book in a long time to make me stop and start looking to find myself.
I’ve made no secret that I’m not as well-versed on various authors as my co-bloggers, Mila and Christine, so I admit to being late sometimes to the game. Published in 2014, The Chronicles of Moxie is a funny, fast paced, witty story of kindergarten teacher, Moxie Summers, a curvy, vivacious red head who is smart, independent and confident. She also has a horrible history of relationships. Enter Miles Dane, a single parent to a child in Moxie’s class.
While they are mostly verbal sparring partners, Moxie + Miles can’t help their attraction to one another. Unfortunately for Moxie, she has a meddling stepmother who often undermines Moxie’s confidence in one area – her self-esteem. The greatest questions Ms. Heller asks, and sufficiently answers, in Moxie are: 1) Are the opinions of others truly the greatest measure of how we value ourselves? and 2) If we can’t love ourselves, why do we expect others to love us?
Like SO many, I greatly struggle with my own issues of self-esteem and self-worth. I don’t have nearly an ounce of the confidence that Moxie has to even have failed relationships. But after reading this book, I can’t help but wonder how I can change this and start living a more worthy life. A life I deem worthy. Moxie had her close friends, Renee and Ryan, to help remind her how special and unique she is, just as she is. I have my ink and pen for journaling and really amazing books to continue to guide me. I’ll start there.
Moxie + Miles’ journey continues in First Comes Love: A Chronicles of Moxie Novel published in 2015.
