RATING: READ IT
Ok, I’m almost embarrassed to admit this, but I haven’t watched a single second of the Olympics this year. I have in the past, but I’ve always been sort of hot and cold when it comes to them. I like them, but I don’t love them.
As is evident from my previous reviews, I’m a big fan of Carrie Aarons and when I learned about her latest release, Blind Landing (Flipped Book 1), I had to read it. Its focus, however, is on Olympic gymnasts and I wasn’t sure if it was my cup of tea. I was completely wrong.
Blind Landing is the story of Natalia + Spencer. Natalia is an elite gymnast competing for her spot on the US gymnastics team at the 2016 Olympics in Rio and Spencer is a former elite gymnast-turned-coach, whose professional career as a gymnast was cut short by an injury. The heat and attraction between the two is instantaneous, but I especially loved how Ms. Aarons handled the development of their relationship, while still keeping true to Natalia’s dreams and focus.
Ms. Aarons takes a subject that is almost entirely foreign to me and made me want to understand it more. She made me care for these women and the struggles they went through to reach these massive goals that they work their entire lives to achieve. The sacrifice, the pain, the fears, the disappointments. Her own experience in the world of gymnastics adds an enormous amount to Blind Landing’s authenticity and the story is all the more powerful for it.
Whether you love the Olympics or not, I have no doubt that you will love this book. And if you are an Olympics addict, you will likely love it even more.
As of 8.11.16, Blind Landing is available on Kindle Unlimited.
