RATING: READ IT
Ok, not gonna lie – the cover totally got me on this one. I know it’s not six pack abs or something dark and delicious like I usually go for, but there was something about this cover that just drew me in. I read the blurb, I liked it, so I jumped in. What I failed to take notice of was that it was YA. I’m not sure if that would have stopped me, but I’m almost glad I didn’t see that, because it meant that I got to read this book.
Rules of a Rebel and a Shy Girl by Jessica Sorensen is the story of Willow + Beck. Best friends who have known each other practically their entire lives. Willow’s family life is particularly disturbing and Beck is her shelter in the storm. Beck’s life isn’t all unicorns and daisies either, but in a different way, and Willow is his everything. However, in her world full of chaos, Willow seeks order and creates a list to keep their relationship firmly in the friend zone.
My instinct is to call this book sweet, and there are many parts of it that are, but this novel is also full of angst and worry and it often felt as though I was waiting for the other shoe to fall. It had an intensity to it that I didn’t expect.
I don’t often read YA, but if I’m going to take my once or twice yearly dip in the genre, I’m glad it was with this book. So, if you love YA, or even if you only read it once in a while like me, Rules of a Rebel and a Shy Girl is a great read. I couldn’t put it down – I just had to know what happened – and I read it in one night.
As of 9.6.16, Rules of a Rebel and a Shy Girl is available on Kindle Unlimited.
