RATING: BUY IT {Robyn} – One of the most important things my parents taught me is having an appreciation of good books and good music. I find it interesting when an author publishes their playlist of songs that inspired a book or they listened to while writing. Sometimes I totally understand how a song could inspire a character or scene, and other times I’m baffled but happy the song worked for them. I’ve never actually read a story that reminded me of one of my favorite songs. Colorful by the Verve Pipe was that song. It’s actually part of the soundtrack to the movie, Rock Star, starring Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Anniston. This song, the second verse more precisely, played over and over as I read Mandi Beck’s Stoned (Wrecked Book 1). As I neared the end of the book I knew exactly why – I’d fallen in love with this story as much as I love the song.

Stoned is the story of Stone + Willow, a recovering addict rock star and the talented woman who was by his side every step of the way. But as is so true with addicts, lies and selfishness destroyed their relationship. It did so much more than that, but that was a shocking twist I never saw coming. While this is a second chance romance that ends with a HEA, the journey they take toward trust and forgiveness is not always easy. It is a remarkable journey though.

Ms. Beck introduced us to the rest of the members of Wrecked, Stone’s band. These are mates determined to see their friend get healthy and stay that way. Life in the spotlight isn’t an easy one, but these guys seem to stay grounded in who they are because of each other. It’s exciting to know we’ll get individual stories for each of them!

RATING: BUY IT {Mila} – There have been a lot of new authors popping up in the quick-and-dirty space these days. Some are great, others are just ok, but Cuffed by Kathryn Nolan really does stand out on its own. It’s a Q+D, so there are some things we can always expect – insta-love, hot sex, HEA. That’s the general trajectory. Cuffed has all of that, but not necessarily in the way that you’d think.

Cuffed is the story of Will, a decorated, career detective and Violet, a con-artist that seduces, then blackmails, men. Will is assigned to Violet’s case and begins to tail her. All of this we learn from the blurb, so I’m comfortable telling you that much. I won’t tell you any more about the story, but I’ve struggled with how to tell you why I liked this so much without giving away any spoilers.

First, it’s rare in the genre to find a female lead that sleeps with multiple men. Regardless of her motivation, I found that refreshing. Yes, refreshing. I liked reading about a woman that owned her sexuality, even if that came from a place of insecurity. Second, dark and dirty reads are some of my favorites and Will is plenty dark…and dirty. Third, I wasn’t sure how the story would resolve itself, but again, I was thrown a bit for a loop. Something we don’t typically see in the genre and something that I personally found sexy and interesting. For me, this was a triple-D: dark, dirty and different. Right up my alley!

My one gripe, if you can even call it that, with this novella is that I wish it had been a novel. These are two very interesting characters with pasts I would have liked to explore much deeper. I would have liked to understand their motivations better and I would have liked more time watching them come together. Ms. Nolan’s writing is tight and the editing was spot on. If Ms. Nolan ever writes Violet + Will’s full story, I would read it in a heartbeat.

As of 9.18.16, both titles are available on Kindle Unlimited.
