RATING: READ IT
I like to think of myself as open-minded and a feminist. And someone who believes one’s sexuality is theirs to define—no judgment. And yet…
Rock F*ck Club by Michelle Mankin is the story of Raven, a young woman who after finding out her rockstar boyfriend has cheated on her, sets off to sleep with 10 rockstars in 10 cities. This declaration is captured on video by her best friend, Marsha, and becomes a viral sensation.
It sounds like a simple, fun, sexy story, but it is so much more than that. RFC is so hot and sexy, unbelievably so, but it’s also sweet and emotional. There’s more depth in these characters than one would expect.
Michelle is a master weaver of tales and RFC is no exception. From the travels to the concerts to the clothing, there are so many lovely, specific details you feel like you’re there in the scene. Yet far beyond the modern-day experiences, Michelle weaves in a beautiful story of the Navajo people. Add to that the colorful characters that surround Raven and you have a story that’s about so much more than sex. But getting back to that…
Like I said, I like to think of myself as open-minded and non-judgmental when it comes to sex, yet it’s amazing how many times I found myself uncomfortable with some of Raven’s choices. You might think that bothered me, but it was actually the opposite. I liked how it made me think. How it made me question my beliefs and how it made me aware of those judgments. I think it’s important to continually question ourselves and push beyond our comfort zones. RFC did that for me—in the best possible way—and I’m so glad that it did.
If you want an incredibly sexy story that also makes you think—and just might make you a little bit uncomfortable—you will definitely want to pick up RFC and meet Raven.
