RATING: BUY IT
I don’t typically read a lot of young adult books since I tend to like the steamier scenes in romance novels, but once I read the blurb for Christopher Harlan’s Away From Here, I was intrigued. I have a high-schooler at home, and I remember getting through high school myself and all of the emotions that went with it. I was immediately drawn into this story, and didn’t want to put it down.
Mr. Harlan does such a great job of putting us in Logan’s head. I felt like I was walking alongside him, experiencing the mortification of your friends making you talk to someone of the opposite sex when you weren’t ready to, of falling in love for the first time and all of the awe and heartbreak that comes with it.
I loved the way the story was told from Logan’s perspective. He’s an awkward teenage boy with a crush on Annalise, who is quirky in her own right. Annalise was an interesting choice for a crush—she’s not the popular, beautiful girl in school but to Logan, she is a complete goddess. The thing that will stick with me most from this story is her use of the word “potato”. It confused me until the very end, then everything clicked into place. It was absolute perfection how it all came together.
These two teenagers go through emotions and experiences that shape who they are, and the adults they’ll grow to be. Sometimes, you just need one kindred spirit to help you navigate the tumultuous teenage years. I loved how Annalise taught Logan so much in their time together.
In reading this book, I couldn’t help but think that I needed to get a copy for my 16-year-old daughter, who is herself a bit awkward at times. I want her to read Logan + Annalise’s story and realize that there is someone for everyone and that, for every experience and person you meet along the way, there is a reason they were put in your life. This is a perfect story to show that, no matter what heartbreak you are facing, you will find your way through and life will go on.
I really enjoyed Away From Here and I will definitely be checking out Mr. Harlan’s other titles! Great read!
